Goodies and Gadgets and the Extras in Remodeling :: Plan for the Added Extras in Remodeling

TVs have Evolved
Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and as we sat in the living room, no, the sitting room, no, I mean — I guess you could actually call it the “viewing room”, no, just the TV room, yes – the TV room of his newly built house, the topic of televisions came up. And we were awaiting dessert, Thanksgiving Day and watching football.
Truthfully, and the backstory goes . . . I have never been one for gadgetry. And I have never been overly impressed. I mean — I have never had the newest, the latest, or the trendiest of, well, anything. Never really seemed to care too much either. For me, and here’s an example: smart phone = flip it open, put it up to your head, and hope the person on the other end is intelligent. Maybe you could say I am one who just allows time to reveal the true value of things. In other words, I’m what you might call a “late adapter.”
Remember when TVs Weighed a Ton
And my brother-in-law; he is a fairly big guy – a weight lifter, a body builder (type) – not competitive, but I guess he could be if really wanted to work at it. We sat discussing the benefits of his new Vizio LED TV — big, at 55 inches and just an outstanding picture. Needless to say, he is very, I mean — very, happy with it.
And I sat there remembering. I thought a few years back to the house that sat on that same spot. A fire took down that 1920s Sears House — it was a beautiful home, beautifully restored. With the fire, and I remember it, so too went a custom entertainment center that he lovingly built. It lived approximately 30 feet or so from where we sat this Thanksgiving Day. It housed a spanking new Sony Bravia.
That Sony Bravia, as he told it – weighed 330 pounds. He admitted, it was difficult to lift, even for him. His new Vizio weighs in at something like 30 pounds . . . or so he claimed. And all I could say was “Wow!”

Plan for the Hidden Extras in Remodeling
In our house we still currently have two “tube-type” TVs. But not for long. You see, this holiday season we plan to do some shopping . . . well . . . for ourselves. We are buying One: smart phones . . . and Two: a couple of new “flat screen” TVs. These will complement the kitchen remodel that we are just now about to finish out.
It reminds me just how frequently we (and OK, maybe it’s only me) forget about all the ancillary stuff that comes along with doing any sort of remodeling. Here’s some examples of what I mean with the “Extras in Remodeling” (in list form for readers over the age of 40 and *errrrmmm* Bob):
- No, I need a new can opener to go on my new countertop;
- We need new fluffy towels to drape over our new shiny bath hardware.;
- We need new curtains for the new kitchen anddddd . . . you need to help pick out the fabric. << My personal favorite!
In this case, in our case, two new TVs . . . one will go along the party wall that separates the living room from the kitchen, and other will be placed inside a hutch my cabinet guy is building for us. . . . And oh yeah! I still can’t forget; there is mounting hardware and a new entertainment center that will need to be purchased. Haven’t really even started shopping for any of this stuff yet, but maybe I find some of these items. And sooner rather than later, I hope — admittedly, not a big fan of shopping.

As friend Becky Shankle explained to us, it is kinda just meant to play out like this. And me — now is the time to work on my kitchen. It is my human instinct. The time of year, Becky says, we head inside to “nest” – the fruit of which is an apparent spike in bizness for kitchen design and other such firms.
Thanks for reading and please wish me luck. ~jb
Outtake
And to tell you more about my brother-in-law, he built (as in the building and designed it too) a gym in his hometown (a small town), Delta, PA. At the time (really only going back 4 or 5 years now), and think about the health clubs you have been in, well . . . they usually have lots and lots of . . . TVs. In the free-weight room, in the room filled with Nautilus equipment, in the spin room, the aerobics room . . . behind the health drink bar. In the locker rooms . . . lots and lots of TVs. No? Each, in his case . . . heavy and affix to the walls with big and bulky mounting brackets. At the time, state of the art. And could you imagine the cost to upgrade these things at this point? Yes. But instead, can you say . . . a victim of circumstance or . . . timing?
Ha…glad you were able to take away some positive information from your trip and be able to hang out with your BIL….hey, maybe he can offer some shopping advice.
By the way, I love lists too and I’m not 40. Because:
1.) They help my ADD…I can more easily skim.
2.) OCDer…yup, that’s me.
3.) Something about them just seem neat and crisp…as if I’m not a slob in everything else. :)
Be sure to have us pay us a visit when he needs timbers for that lovely house :) We’re right up the road.
yes amy . . . always the “homie” . . . ah . . . the list thing has been a hot bed issue around here since @ExtremelyAvg ‘s almost viral g’ post on lists . . . I feel sometimes that a good writer should be able to help with your ADD in list form or not. The parenthetical crack was meant for Bob Borson and a tweet from earlier in the week, and for my own change in attitude since I turned 40 in Nov. Great day. and thx for listing the benies of lists.
Oh…and did you sense my sarcasm that I forgot to mention…found in all my writing and my list. 40 is quickly approaching and I’m not the least bit ready for it. Maybe I wake up as a learned 20 year old that morning…hmmm…a girl can dream, right?
sarcasm? noooooo. ah 40s ok — I got to keep reminding myself that I shouldn’t do so much stupid shit. << big smile.
HA!! I am totally not the handler of electronic equipment in this house. I do space & circulation & leave the many bazillion hair-splitting details of technology to the other half! It all comes out in the wash. :)
hey Becky your diagram was too good to pass up! and yeah . . . I guess I’d be a better hubby if I spent more time researching electronics and less time *errrrmm* tweeting and doing other things.
I will say though that I am from the train of thought that my time is money and that spending loads of time researching “the best deal” is well a waste of money . . . “A wash” and a sale will virtually never get me in the door. thanks for the comment and great day.
Okay, I like list too because I also am a skimmer … so maybe I missed it but who is this over 40 ‘Bob’ that you mention? Don’t let my birth certificate fool you – despite my dazzling white hair, I have the maturity of a 30 year old and the stamina of a 20 year old.
Other than that, TV’s just aren’t that expensive so make sure that you pony up the $$ to hang them correctly and run your cables properly (as in – nobody wants to see them)
yes, I will and I thought about adding a caption to the picture. my bro-in-law would be peeved if he knew I posted this . . . he himself is still shopping a new entertainment center, at which point he will make the final connections. Smartly he chased up the wall to the recess with scrap 1 1/2″ pvc — other products such as eXapath of course can accomplish this function.
and just having a little fun you know . . . and that’s of course why I said — “over forty and Bob.” and you read me. *wiping tear from eye* touched. thanks for the comment, even on my poorly hacked out first draft. great day.
Damn! When we put in hardwood floors a few years ago, the snowball effect led to remodeling the powder room, a new kitchen island and barstools and new oriental rugs. It didn’t occur to me to get a new TV out of the deal. Damn! You’re a genius jb.
I wouldn’t call that genius. but I will say that hardwood floors is one of the biggest culprits. you are moving your old furniture/rugs out right? “what a great time to . . . ” and $5000 later. At minimum you need to budget for those little no scuff pads. stuff you don’t think about when you plan for the job itself.
on a side note: upload a pic for this email at gravatar.com and a pic will display above
First, Bob does NOT have the maturity of a 30 year old. Unless it’s on loan. Left to his own devices, his maturity level is right up there with teenage boys who love to run out in the road and move the traffic cones around!
Second, this is one of my favorite of your posts, JB. And you are SO right about the ancillary changes that go with a remodel. Guess I should go pull out my Costco ads for tv’s. Hmmm, maybe I’ll just send the ads to David Mathias. Do they have Costco in SwizzlestickLand?
Well, back at ya. I think this was my favorite of your comments. And for the record I think Bob’s maturity level is just right. . . I just hope that some of what he’s got rubs off on me . . . as I steadily gray. As for David’s connection to this — I bet the shipping would neutralize any potential SwizzlestickLand savings. Who are we kidding, Switzerland is expensive! thx.
